Roadside Drug Testing Petition

A Nelson family have started a petition to start roadside drug testing on the anniversary of the death of their son to a Methed up driver.

Karen Dow says "It is becoming increasingly more important that we introduce random drug testing with the Government liberalising access to drugs like cannabis."

MP Nick Smith says in 2018 "there were 79 deaths from drug drivers, exceeding for the first time the number killed by drunk drivers, which was 70".

Land Transport (Random Oral Fluid Testing) Amendment Bill

In September Labour and the Greens voted down National MP Alastair Scott’s Land Transport (Random Oral Fluid Testing) Amendment Bill. The Bill was very similar to what the Dow’s are asking for now. So unfortunately, I can’t see the Petition getting far at this stage.

The government are going to blame the cost and the amount of time oral fluid testing will take but in opposition now Police Minister Stuart Nash was in favour of roadside testing.

It will happen

With the government liberalising drugs, it is only a matter of time before Roadside Drug Testing comes in. People are now watching the number of Drug related road deaths vs Alcohol related road deaths, so the pressure will come on.
